ABOUT

Course Description

I will be following the 6th-grade Seed Standards for instruction.  Students will learn to think and act like a scientist as they engage in thinking about the natural world.  Students will immerse themselves in real-world problem-solving situations.  Students will use science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas to make sense of phenomenons.  Sixth graders will

6.1  Explore the structure and motion within the solar system and study the impact of gravity.

6.2 Investigate how energy affects matter, including phase changes and particle motion.

6.3 Explore how energy and matter relationships affect Earth's systems resulting in weather patterns and climate.

6.4 Explain how the interactions between organisms and the environment can affect stability and change in ecosystems.

The goal is that each student will become a complex thinker, problem solver, self-directed learner, quality worker, cooperative group leader and participant, a contributor to the community, and an effective communicator.

GRADES ARE WEIGHTED AS FOLLOWS

Valley View uses Standards-Based Grading.  For more information about how it works and why we use it, please visit the school website: http://vvms.nebo.edu/.  The bottom line is that grades are based solely on mastery of the “I can” statements.  No points are given for effort, behavior, or as extra credit.  Any assignment or test can be redone until the end of the term.

You will be graded in the following categories

Learning Target Proficiencies are tests that show how well you have learned each of the 16 units we are covering this year.  Each test can be retaken multiple times for the highest score.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not wait until the final week of the term to get clarification as that will limit the time you have to make corrections to your grade.

Learning Targets will be assessed using the following 4-point scale:

4 = Standard Met, A grade.  The student demonstrates an understanding of the ideas and processes that were explicitly taught and practiced during class.  There may still be some errors or omissions that do not interfere with the key concept.

3 = Standard Nearly Met,  B grade.   The student demonstrates a basic understanding of the ideas and processes that were explicitly taught and practiced during class but still lacks some key conceptual understanding.  There are still some errors or omissions when demonstrating key concepts of the content.

2 = Standard Partially Met, C grade.   The student is beginning to demonstrate an understanding of the simple ideas and processes that were explicitly taught and practiced during class.  However, the student demonstrates significant conceptual errors that impede their understanding of key concepts.

1 = Standard Not Met, D grade.  The student demonstrates limited understanding of the basic ideas and/or has difficulty retaining the ideas and processes that were explicitly taught and practiced during class.  There are consistent errors or omissions when identifying the key concepts of the content.

0 = No Evidence, F grade.  There is not enough evidence of learning to determine a grade at this time

ASSIGNMENTS &  HOMEWORK

Most work will be done in class and will be graded either using the completion rubric or accuracy rubric. However, assignments not completed in class become homework. These are to be completed and turned in at the beginning of the next class day unless otherwise state.  All assignments are posted on Canvas.

CANVAS

All assignments are posted on canvas.  To make up missing work please go to: Canvas, Modules, and the assignment date.

CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship will be assessed on classroom behavior daily.  Keeping our classroom rules will significantly reduce the chance that you will have any problems with an unsatisfactory mark.

HONESTY/INTEGRITY

Cheating in any form is unacceptable.  A student who is caught cheating will receive a zero for the assignment/assessment and will have their citizenship dropped to a “U”.

PREPAREDNESS

Please turn in assignments on time!  Absent work must be made up within two days of the absence or it will be marked as late. Special circumstances will be dealt with individually.  All assignments are due at the end of the term.
*If you are absent for a test, you may come in to make it up at recess.
